Pulmonary Function Testing
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs), also known as spirometry or lung function tests, are a group of noninvasive breathing tests that check how well the lungs are working. These measure your ability to breathe and how well your lungs can bring oxygen to the rest of your body and remove carbon dioxide from your blood. Your physician may recommend pulmonary function tests to:
- Help diagnose asthma, respiratory infections, COPD, lung cancer and other conditions
- Decide whether to proceed with certain surgery or medical procedures
- Monitor treatment and effects of chronic lung diseases
- Aid in preventative healthcare
